Bright Ideas #103 – Gobble, Gobble

Today is indeed Thanksgiving (also known as Turkey Day—poor buggers. Heck of a tribute to the domesticated ancestors of what was almost our national bird).

This is one of my very favorite holidays. Because I feel like it is one of the least consumeristic and overblown. And it’s not particularly religious, so it doesn’t exclude anyone.

Plus, it is a chance to take some time off…Get together with family and friends…Eat a bunch of yummy homemade food…And hopefully take time to reflect on all the things you really do have to be thankful for

In fact, when this arrives in your Inbox, I’ll be happily stuffing myself on way too much fattening food (sweet potato casserole and pumpkin pie. Yum!!), with some of my favorite people. I hope you’re doing the same

If you read my last email, you already know that every year my husband put on a big, crazy, camping feast we’ve dubbed “The Raining Turkey Festival”. Although I love all the food, kayaking and time with friends, my favorite activity has become an important part of the tradition…

After we’re all well stuffed, we go around the table and everybody shares something they are thankful for from the last year. Sometimes these are heartfelt. Other times they’re funny. But all are special.

It’s amazing how much everybody gets out of it. The smiling, the laughter, the genuine appreciation of good food, good friends, and life in general creates such a deep sense of well-being.

Because in this stressed out, plugged in, crazy busy world it’s way too easy to forget about all the good things we have to be thankful for. Instead we’re focused on all that is frustrating. Or everything we have to get done.

Here’s the thing…
---------------------------------------------------------
You get more of what you are thinking about.
---------------------------------------------------------

A lot of people out there are probably writing newsletters about being thankful. And you might say it’s overdone. But one of the most powerful things you can do is stay focused on all the wonderful things in your life (and there’s always something, even if it is tiny).

So consider this another friendly reminder to stop in the middle of all the planning, cooking and traveling—or whatever it is you’re doing. Take a deep breath. And actually write down 10 things you are thankful for.

They can be small or large. Fun or serious. Business or personal. It doesn’t matter a bit.

Try doing this with your family or close friends and sharing everyone’s lists. You’ll be amazed at the result.

To make it easier for you, here’s what I’m thankful for this year…

1) My wonderful, supportive, uber-positive, handsome, funny, super-smart hubby of 7 years.

2) Emails from clients and subscribers. I love hearing about your successes. Few things make me happier than knowing some piece of advice I offered helped you grow your business and achieve your dreams. So keep ‘em coming!

3) The Internet. I couldn’t do what I do or live the life I live without it.

4) My new down puffy jacket. It is sooooooo toasty.

5) My health. It sure is nice (especially with all the injuries I’ve had) to still be able to do the extreme sports I love with 40 looming on the not-so-distant horizon.

6) Hammer nutrition products. After 20 years of trying to keep up with boys, I finally found the closest thing to a magic potion there is. These all natural supplements keep me from lagging and falling behind the pack.

7) Dogs. Mine or my friends. Growing up a vet’s daughter it’s hard to imagine a life without their wet noses, wagging tails and stinky farts.

8) Off buttons. I love quiet. Every time I un-tether myself from technology (for a day, a weekend or even an hour) I feel refreshed. If I had to be connected and available 24/7, I think I might kill myself.

9) The rising cost of gas. Sounds crazy right? But people only make changes when they feel enough pain. As a long-time environmentalist, I’m thrilled this has made people wake up and demand alternatives.

10) Another Turkey Fest (#8!). How cool is it that our friends fly in from all over the country to celebrate together in what is often pouring rain or bitter cold?!?

I hope this article is enough to inspire you to ponder all the good in your life. Because when you do, you’re sure to draw even more of what you love, want and appreciate to you.

Happy Thanksgiving!
