When it comes to using your Website to sell products or promote
services, getting quality, targeted traffic is key. Because
if people aren’t visiting your site, you don’t have anyone to
sell to. And if the people visiting your site aren’t quality
and targeted (IE interested in what you’re offering), you still
don’t have anyone to sell to.
Even the world’s greatest Website won’t make a
single sale, or generate a single lead, if no one ever goes
there! So how do you make sure the right people
find and visit your site?
Basically, there are 4 ways to drive visitor
traffic to your Website...
#1 Offline advertising and marketing ¬–
Anything from an ad to a business card that provides your Website
address (URL) can send you traffic. This can work well—especially
if you have an offer they can’t refuse as an incentive.
This is a no-brainer, and everyone should be doing this everywhere
they can. However it takes time to build a steady flow of site
visitors this way. And you may have to spend money on the advertising
and marketing to boot.
#2 Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and submissions
¬– If you’ve got a Website you should do your best to optimize
your site for the search engines. Submitting your site to the
major search engines is a must.
But using SEO techniques to move you to the top of the search
results—and keep you there—is a complicated process and a field
that changes almost daily (Google typically updates the algorithms
it uses to rank Websites a few times a month!). And good SEO
firms charge and arm and leg while rarely making any kind of
guarantees.
#3 Incoming links from other Websites ¬–
Strategic linking can be done in lots of ways—from exchanging
links with other sites to submitting content online, joining
social networks, and more.
While this is one of my favorite ways to get targeted Website
traffic, again it takes time and effort to build a steady stream
of visitors. Plus you often need to keep creating a good bit
of fresh content to really see the benefits.
#4 Pay-per-click online ads like Google AdWords ¬–
If you want a way to drive traffic to your Website immediately,
this is it. These are the ads that typically run down the right
hand side of your results screen anytime you do a Google search.
Other types of pay-per-click ads may be listed at the top of
your search results screen as “paid advertisments”. Whatever
you're using, the same basic rules apply.
As long as you’ve bid on the right keywords and written a compelling
ad, you can start attracting visitors right away. But, depending
on the keywords you want, AdWords can also be highly competitive
(read expensive).
As the name pay-per-click implies, you pay each
time someone clicks on your ad—regardless of whether they buy
anything on your site or not. So you can’t just
pick keywords, throw up an ad, and expect to make a ton of sales.
Attract the wrong visitors and you can pay a lot of money for
nothing. Ditto with sending them to the wrong type of Webpage.
Thankfully, AdWords ads also let you track results, test multiple
ads to see which one works best, and set spending limits to
keep your budget in check. You can even set up local search
campaigns, making it perfect for service oriented businesses
with only local clients.
Plus there are a boatload of tricks to making AdWords work
for you without spending a fortune (like using negative keywords
and buying keyword blocks). That’s why I’m bringing in a certified,

Who Is Aaron Gaul, and Why Should

company to manufacture handheld computers for statistical quality
control and time motion studies.
Aaron has provided computer training and technical support for
many well-known Northwest companies and small startups. For
